Domaine Charles Audoin Marsannay ''Clos du Roy'' 2022 is primarily sourced from dedicated parcels of old vines located within the ''Clos du Roy'' lieu-dit, situated in the northernmost part of the Marsannay appellation in Chenôve. This historic vineyard, once a possession of the Dukes of Burgundy, is widely regarded as one of the premier sites in the village and a top candidate for future Premier Cru status. This vintage is a blend of 100% Pinot Noir. The estate is managed with sustainable practices (HVE3), and this cuvée is crafted with meticulous attention to terroir, featuring a satiny texture and bright acidity. It was aged in French oak barrels (approximately 20-30% new) for over a year to preserve its fresh, vibrant fruit character while emphasizing the vineyard's powerful, ageworthy structure.
Marsannay is only 3km from its more famous neighbour, GevreyChambertin, but is increasingly popular as a source of great wines from the Côte de Nuits at reasonable prices. Domaine Charles Audoin is a serious domaine of 13 hectares, founded in 1972, and developed in recent years by Cyril Audoin. Cyril is a really fine vigneron and winemaker and combines infectious enthusiasm for his job and his wines (which are now organically-certified) with precise and thoughtful cellar work. His ability to extract and manage tannin is impressive, creating wines that are silky, rounded and balanced, even in the recent warm vintages.
Tasting Notes: These wines show today wonderful balance, texture and perfume, that make them irresistible in youth as well as with bottle age. An expressive nose offers plenty aromas of sweet, soft fruit, leading to a supple and rounded palate; a wine that is drinking very well-delicious, succulent and fruit-forward in style.
Serving Suggestion: Pairs best with robust dishes such as roast duck or goose, game birds, rabbit stew and cheese dishes.
